New Motorola Linux-Based Mobile Phones Built on Trolltech Platform

MobileTrolltech®, provider of leading technologies for Linux and cross-platform software development, has announced that Motorola has chosen Trolltech's Qt®/Embedded Linux development platform as the foundation for its upcoming E680 and A780 mobile phones. The E680 and A780 represent the latest in a series of handsets Motorola is building on the Trolltech/Linux platform, following the Motorola A760 phone announced last year.

"Trolltech's sophisticated, customizable development environment for embedded Linux is leading the way for the widespread adoption of Linux in mobile devices," said Mike Sudol, vice president for Motorola's GSM Open Platform Products group. "With Trolltech technology, we've been able to leverage the benefits of Linux to deliver a series of innovative, feature-rich handsets that can benefit from the thousands of Trolltech-compatible applications. We are looking forward to continuing our collaboration with Trolltech to develop additional leading-edge devices in the future."

Trolltech: Bringing Linux to Mobile Devices

The Motorola E680 and A780 phones are built using Trolltech's Qt/Embedded technology, part of Trolltech's product line for Linux-based mobile devices. In addition to Qt/Embedded, Trolltech also offers Qtopia®, a complete, customizable application platform and user interface for Linux-based mobile phones and PDAs. With Qt/Embedded or Qtopia as the development platform, mobile phone manufacturers and service providers can cost-effectively develop software, while maintaining control of their own branding and user interface. Trolltech development platforms extend the flexibility and cost-savings benefits of Linux to mobile devices, serving as an alternative to proprietary platforms such as Windows Mobile and Symbian.

"Today's mobile phones with advanced features such as cameras, email, Web browsing and voice functions, require the more sophisticated operating environment that Linux delivers," said Haavard Nord, Trolltech CEO. "Trolltech's development platforms and Linux give vendors the freedom to innovate with a level of control over branding and design that is not possible with proprietary software. The mobile device market is the next big frontier for Linux, and with partners such as Motorola, Trolltech is well positioned to drive its adoption."
