Orlando, Fla. – Intel has announced Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) support on its family of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) server adapters. The company has developed an initiator that will be bundled with Intel 10GbE server adapters for PCI Express to enable FCoE functionality. Intel also introduced the Intel 10 Gigabit AF DA Dual Port Server Adapter, a low-cost FCoE-capable copper adapter with an energy-efficient, low-profile design for rack installations in the data center.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – DVI, facing strong competition from other technologies, including HDMI and the DisplayPort standard in the PC market, will begin a steep decline in 2008, reports In-Stat. DVI will decline from 112 million device shipments in 2007 to just 3 million device shipments in 2011, the high-tech market research firm says. Digital visual interface (DVI) and high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI), are related, high-bandwidth, unidirectional, uncompressed digital interface standards.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – The Ethernet Alliance has said that the IEEE New Standards Committee (NesCom) has approved the Higher Speed Study Group’s project authorization request (PAR), and the resulting project will now be known as the IEEE P802.3ba task force. The task force recently held its first interim session, January 23-25 in Portland, Oregon to review proposals to be considered for the draft standard.

Washington, D.C. – The Federal Trade Commission has announced a complaint and settlement with Negotiated Data Solutions LLC (N-Data), which allegedly violated federal law by engaging in unfair methods of competition and unfair acts or practices regarding its enforcement of certain patents against makers of equipment employing Ethernet, a computer networking standard used in nearly every computer sold in the U.S. The settlement will protect consumers from higher prices and ensure competition by preventing the company from charging higher royalties for the technologies used in the standard.
