ByteEnable installs Mandrake 10 RC1 on his old laptop for grins and takes some pics.

Mandrake 10 RC1 Peek

I couldn't resist taking a peek at Mandrake 10. Its packed with the 2.6 kernel, making the temptation so hard to resist.

Feature Set
  • Linux Kernel 2.6.3
  • Gnome 2.4
  • KDE 3.2
  • Evolution 1.4
  • Mozilla 1.6
  • Epiphany 1.0.7
  • Open Office 1.1
  • Glibc 2.3.3 with NPTL support
  • XFree86 4.3 (with back ports from 4.4pre)
  • Gimp 1.2
  • Samba 3.0.2
  • Xine 1-rc3

Plus lots of other applications that make life easier for a desktop user. The installation was a breeze, even on the old Dell laptop.

The only problem that I ran into was that accelerated graphics was not working in this RC1 release. I half heartedly attempted to get accelerated graphics working but failed. The "double click" setting is still broken when using konqueror in "view detailed list" mode. These are two aggravations that I cannot live with, otherwise I would be migrating to this release candidate even, instead of waiting for the final release. A promising feature is power management with my laptop. So far, Mandrake 10 RC1 works better on my old laptop than LindowsOS Laptop Edition! Tune in later the for the full review when Mandrake 10 RTMs'.
